All about the development of Exponential (CMS) by Graham Brookins, 7x (formerly Brookins Consulting) and our think tank kracker.org.
Hello Exponential Community,
7x keeps the complete doc.ez.no documentation as a static HTML archive in a public GitHub repository. Two free Exponential extensions turn that archive, or any folder of HTML or Markdown, or a live website, into real content objects in your own Exponential site with one command. One run gives finished work; running it again is never needed, but always safe. The result runs live at doc.exponential.earth.
The repositories
- se7enxweb/exponential: Exponential 6.0.15 or later, the CMS.
- se7enxweb/exponential.doc.exponential.earth: the static archive of doc.ez.no, 88,680 pages.
- se7enxweb/exp_static_html_imports: the import framework. Four source types, your own types, safe re-runs, reports.
- se7enxweb/exp_doc: documentation content classes, the import rules for the archive, and two designs: Classic (doc2025, the static site exactly) and Modern (doc2026).
All are free software under the GNU General Public License v2.0 (or any later version).
What you need
- Exponential 6.0.15 or later (earlier 6.0 versions work without the audit events and the console aliases).
- PHP 7.4 or later; PHP 8.0 to 8.5 are supported.
- Any of five databases: MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, SQLite, Oracle or MongoDB.
- The online editor ezoe, active by default. Its HTML parser turns pages into rich text.
- git on the server, for sources given as a repository.
- For exp_doc also: eztags (labels) and xrowmetadata (the metadata attribute).
Example 1: a folder of Markdown, in minutes
Install the framework from your Exponential root:
git clone https://github.com/se7enxweb/exp_static_html_imports.git extension/exp_static_html_imports
Activate it in settings/override/site.ini.append.php:
[ExtensionSettings] ActiveExtensions[]=exp_static_html_imports
Deploy, check, look first, then import:
php bin/php/ezpgenerateautoloads.php -e php bin/php/ezcache.php --clear-all php bin/php/console exp:static-import:types php bin/php/console exp:static-import:run --markdown --source=/path/to/docs --parent-node=2 --dry-run php bin/php/console exp:static-import:run --markdown --source=/path/to/docs --parent-node=2 php bin/php/console exp:static-import:status
- exp:static-import:types lists the four types: --doc-html, --html-generic, --markdown, --sitemap-crawl.
- --dry-run counts what would be created, updated, flagged and removed, writes a report, and changes nothing.
- Each Markdown file (.md, .markdown) becomes a Folder below node 2: name from the title, short description from the body. README.md and index.md are the index page of their folder. Front matter is read; code blocks keep their language.
- On Velocity, php bin/php/console exp:velocity deploy --allow-root-user replaces the two deploy lines.
Example 2: a folder of HTML, or a live website
php bin/php/console exp:static-import:run --html-generic --source=/path/to/html --parent-node=2 --dry-run php bin/php/console exp:static-import:run --html-generic --source=/path/to/html --parent-node=2 php bin/php/console exp:static-import:run --sitemap-crawl --source=https://www.example.com --parent-node=2
- --html-generic reads .html and .htm files; index.html is the folder page. The title comes from h1, the body from main, article or body; nav, header and footer are removed; code in pre keeps its language. Linked .pdf and .zip files become File objects, other assets Image objects.
- --sitemap-crawl reads the pages in the site's sitemap.xml politely: robots.txt respected, one request a second, its own user agent, and each page fetched once.
- --path='docs/*' imports only the matching paths (shell patterns) and --limit=50 only 50 pages: a quick first look at a large source.
Example 3: a real site, imported in 37 seconds: Learn X in Y minutes
doc.exponential.earth/learninminutes is Learn X in Y minutes (CC BY-SA 3.0): 201 programming language tours, imported straight from GitHub into a siteaccess with its own content tree. This is everything it took.
1. The import type, in settings/override/statichtmlimport.ini.append.php:
[ImportTypes] TypeList[learnx]=expStaticImportTypeLearnX [Type_learnx] SourceRepository=https://github.com/adambard/learnxinyminutes-docs.git ParentRemoteID=learninminutes_site_root Suffixes[] Suffixes[]=md IncludePaths[] IncludePaths[]=*.md ExcludePaths[] ExcludePaths[]=README.md ExcludePaths[]=CONTRIBUTING.md DefaultClass=exp_doc_page AttributeMap[] AttributeMap[exp_doc_page/title]=title AttributeMap[exp_doc_page/body]=body AttributeMap[exp_doc_page/original_html]=original_html AttributeMap[exp_doc_page/source_path]=source_path
- SourceRepository: the import clones the repository itself and pulls it on every later run.
- IncludePaths[]=*.md takes the English pages at the top; the translations live in folders (de/, fr/ ...), and a pattern like de/*.md imports one of them.
- exp_doc_page is a class of exp_doc; any class with a title and a rich text body works (article/title, article/body).
2. The one complication, and its easy fix. These pages have no title in their front matter, and their first "# " line is a code comment, so the dry run named the Python page "Single line comments start with a number symbol." A type of your own, in an extension of your own, names each page by the front matter's name instead. Save it as extension/learninminutes/classes/expstaticimporttypelearnx.php, add ActiveExtensions[]=learninminutes to settings/override/site.ini.append.php, and run php bin/php/ezpgenerateautoloads.php -e:
<?php
class expStaticImportTypeLearnX extends expStaticImportTypeMarkdown
{
public function identifier()
{
return 'learnx';
}
public function parse( $source, $path )
{
$page = parent::parse( $source, $path );
list( $front ) = self::splitFrontMatter( $page['original_html'] );
$meta = self::frontMatter( $front );
$name = isset( $meta['name'] ) ? $meta['name'] : ( isset( $meta['language'] ) ? $meta['language'] : '' );
if ( is_string( $name ) && trim( $name ) !== '' )
$page['title'] = trim( $name );
return $page;
}
}3. A siteaccess with its own content tree root:
- A section page (or folder) for the site's root, below the Websites node, with the remote id learninminutes_site_root.
- settings/siteaccess/learninminutes/: a copy of your front siteaccess with content.ini [NodeSettings] RootNode, site.ini IndexPage and DefaultPage (/content/view/full/<root node>), PathPrefix (the root's URL path), SiteURL and SiteName set for the new site.
- learninminutes added to SiteList[], AvailableSiteAccessList[] and RelatedSiteAccessList[] in settings/override/site.ini.append.php.
- The Anonymous role's user/login policy allowed on the new siteaccess, or visitors are refused.
- Caches cleared: php bin/php/ezcache.php --clear-tag=ini, and with DesignLocationCache=enabled also --clear-id=design_base,template,template-override.
4. Look first, then import:
php bin/php/console exp:static-import:run --learnx --dry-run php bin/php/console exp:static-import:run --learnx
- Dry run: 201 pages, nothing written, 6.1 seconds.
- Import: 201 pages created, 0 failed, 36.7 seconds.
- Again, nothing changed upstream: 201 unchanged, 5.7 seconds.
- Again, after a rendering fix: only the 141 changed pages updated, 60 unchanged, 21.6 seconds. Nothing to clean up by hand.
Use exp_static_html_imports from 2026-11-07 or later: before it, Markdown pages on Exponential 6.0.15 were stored as the word "Array", and wrapped lines lost their spaces. This import found both; the fix is commit e4a240c.
Your own classes and sources
Copy the type's group from extension/exp_static_html_imports/settings/statichtmlimport.ini.append.php into settings/override/statichtmlimport.ini.append.php and change it. For example, HTML pages as Articles:
[Type_html-generic] SourceLocation=/path/to/html ParentNode=2 DefaultClass=article AttributeMap[] AttributeMap[article/title]=title AttributeMap[article/body]=body
- Source: SourceLocation (a folder) or SourceRepository (a git URL the import clones and pulls).
- Place: ParentNode, or ParentRemoteID for a node with that remote id.
- Classes: DefaultClass, ClassRules[] (a class per path pattern) and AttributeMap[] (class/attribute=field).
- Rules are INI by default, or YAML, or a PHP rule class (RulesFormat).
- A source type of your own is a PHP class implementing expStaticImportTypeInterface, registered in statichtmlimport.ini [ImportTypes] TypeList[].
- Every rule is described in the extension's doc/rules.md, also shown in the help center when the extension is active.
Example 4: your own copy of the doc.ez.no archive
git clone https://github.com/se7enxweb/exp_static_html_imports.git extension/exp_static_html_imports git clone https://github.com/se7enxweb/exp_doc.git extension/exp_doc
Activate both in settings/override/site.ini.append.php, in this order:
[ExtensionSettings] ActiveExtensions[]=exp_static_html_imports ActiveExtensions[]=exp_doc
Give the folder that will be the documentation site's root the remote id exp_doc_site_root, then:
php bin/php/ezpgenerateautoloads.php -e php bin/php/ezcache.php --clear-all php bin/php/console exp:migration:run --extension=exp_doc php bin/php/console exp:doc:import --path='FAQ/*' --dry-run php bin/php/console exp:doc:import --path='FAQ/*' php bin/php/console exp:doc:import
- The migrations create the class group Documentation with its classes (pages, sections, manuals, versions, tutorials and their steps, FAQ groups and their questions, extension reference pages, images and files, each with a Bootstrap icon and a metadata attribute), the sections Doc, Media and Hidden, the role Doc reader for anonymous read access, and the media folder.
- exp:doc:import clones the archive from its repository by itself and imports it with the documentation's rules (exp_doc/settings/statichtmlimport.ini.append.php). It takes the same options as exp:static-import:run.
- --path='FAQ/*' imports one part in minutes. The whole archive is 88,680 pages: its final run took 69 minutes on our server. An interrupted run continues where it stopped when you run the same command again.
- Design: set SiteDesign=doc (Modern) or SiteDesign=doc2025 (Classic) in the front siteaccess's site.ini.append.php. The header switches between them with one click.
- Cronjobs: run runcronjobs.php frequent every five minutes. It reads the front page's commit and forum feeds and recounts the Contributors page; without it both still work, more slowly.
- SQLite: after a large import run PRAGMA analysis_limit = 1000; ANALYZE; again (a migration does it once). It changes no data and keeps content fetches fast.
- Duplicate contributors: php bin/php/console exp:doc:contributor-merge --into=<contributor> --from=<duplicate> [--dry-run].
One run is enough; running again is safe
- Identity: every page is the object with remote id staticimport-<type>-<md5 of its source path>, wherever it has been moved.
- Changed source: a new version is published. Unchanged: nothing is written.
- Edited in the CMS: the page is flagged and left alone; --overwrite-flagged writes it anyway and the edit is lost.
- Gone from the source: the node is hidden and reported; --apply-removals moves it to the trash.
- Copies of a page and redirect stubs become redirects to it; error pages are skipped. Every old path, with and without .html, redirects to its new node.
- Large sources run in batches (--batch, 50 by default) and save their position after each; the same command resumes, --restart starts over, --no-pull skips the git pull.
- Every run writes a JSON report (schema exp-static-import/1), a Markdown summary and audit trail events.
- In the administration, Setup > Static site import shows the runs, starts one as a background job, and opens each report with one click.
Questions, ideas and pull requests are welcome on GitHub. Enjoy!
Hello Inkernet!
I apologize for the lack of updates here in The Exponential Blog (and social media in general).
7x has at the direction of myself and the foundation been working harder and longer than ever before to build the next release of Exponential (6.0.15stable). I have not done much but around the clock development to solve even more problems facing users today out of the box in a new installation of Exponential preventing users from needing to pay for the features or code or general knowledge to power their website in today's modern era.
In short be forewarned 6.0.15stable will change the face of the internet; not all at once of course :)
The people who respect never fail operations and features provided before they need to pay for additional development just to make use of the products from a vendor will adopt solutions that scale in advance of needs with zero to marginal cost over non free offerings.
"I get a steady stream on non-free offers from lost souls who have no value to offer; I smirk because we are giving away our best and brightest for zero to marginal cost and these other internet spammers just can't compete with FREEDOM."
Also in the news recently (after a lot of very hard work to free the users!): The Exponential Foundation and 7x Releases The Brand New Exponential Documentation Portal!
We are in the finishing stages of release preparation and you can see the work in advance of the official release at our online demo.

Hello Friends!
I write briefly today to share a blog post I wrote on blog.kracker.org titled, '7x Launches ./SlashNews at slashNews.earth'.
Read the story behind the scenes from a previous post titled, '7x Releases HackerNewsDelta.com powered by Exponential and diggClone' and before that the post, '7x Releases a web based content voting solution called 7x Digg [Sigma] using eZ Publish Platform!'.
Who can say what the future will hold for what started out as a simple test of what was possible with a little focused interest while developing with my favorite cms.
What do you think? Which site do you like most? Do you like the original digg.one, or the second engine, hackerNewsDelta.com or the 3rd incarnation of the diggClone project implementations known as Slash or SlashNews.earth more / most of all?
I wager knowing that it's hard to choose but if you must; choose wisely and register and post your first link + description (story) on the websites for others to read and vote for online?
Happy Hacking!

7x is extremely pleased to announce the wave of releases for Exponential Platform Legacy to users worldwide.
Try our brand new kernel, responsive admin design, responsive website design for the front end and lots of your favorite classic features!
7x urges you to run Exponential Platform Legacy on a secure release of PHP like 8.3 but our software supports both PHP 8.1 through 8.5 so there is no reason not to upgrade to a more stable and secure Exponential Platform Legacy.
Read the Share announcements for v3.3.44.7, v4.6.23.2 and v5.0.2. You can download the releases from GitHub or Composer! Then start a conversation about your own experience on our share forums about Exponential Platform. For those who don’t know about Exponential Platform Legacy yet read up on our favorite free software (GPL) content management system Exponential Platform Legacy.
I am very excited to announce the release of Exponential Basic 2.4.0.2 which includes a greatly expanded and bugfixed kernel featuring our PHP 8.5 support added into the kernel design.
This release features a wide range of improvements to the core kernel modules provided by default like php 8.4/8.5 support.
- Almost all previous reported/unreported bugs have been fixed with help with Claude Sonnet 4.6.
- Performance enhacements made to article frontpage view and trade product listing view. Improved page loading (speed).
- eZGroupEventCalendar bugfixes have been made to restore proper use of the calendar as originally designed. (All views function as designed).
- SQLite performance has been improved greatly including more reliable locking timeout handling within the kernel.
Exponential Basic is based upon an eZ Publish 2.x module based kernel now reorganized and refactored to use the main directory named 'kernel/' to hold all of the Exponential Basic Modules (presently, including your custom modules (refactor to operate within the eZ Publish Basic Kernel Layout)).
Exponential Basic comes with a strong recommendation to use mod_rewrite provided by Apache and many other similar web servers to route all requests through our main front index.php file. Same for admin virtual host based website administration.
Exponential Basic is the same cms as originally introduced as eZ Publish 1.0 to 2.2.9 (last version; surprisingly minimal changes in this time) with regards to base features provided and supported, yet Exponential Basic goes further with the integration of eZ Region from (Brookins Consulting; 2001) and many features developed to refine the e-commerce store integration not seen in years or ever. This makes eZ PB a more usable solution for USA based users. More feature expansion is expected in future releases as we release more code over time.
This means with Exponential Basic 2.4.0.2 you can use the new PHP 8.5 support on your existing eZ Publish 2 website(s) with a simple backup and upgrade. Note: Exponential Basic DB Schema is more improved than changed with few differences other than bugfixes.
Pull your older eZ Publish 2 code out of your hard drive records and take a walk down memory lane and upgrade today! Some development may be required.
7x plans to continue to support and develop Exponential Basic for the foreseeable future. Contact me if you are interested in buying 7x Paid Support to Hire me to help you reach your goals faster than alone.
I am very excited as we have officially confirmed, after much other work recently (more coming soon) that our Original Support request to the GitHub CLI Team to support our story to enable users to modify via github cli script repository sponsorship meta data changes to enable or disable repository sponsorship button / meta data display if a .github/FUNDING.yml file is present and configured.
This means with the documentation provided by the GitHub CLI Support Team you too can have thousands of repositories and enable sponsorship information dynamically for all of them! With a little work, it can be done faster with our support!
This quick simple supported solution is proudly offered here to others with a similar need. We hope this helps you reach your own goals faster!
We were able to enable sponsorship buttons on over 884 repositories in less than 2 hours all without manual clicking via simple scripting.

This project uses the remains of the abandoned eZ Publish Platform Software Stack licensed under GPLv2, when updated to php8+ support it resumes working as originally designed despite it's maturity and free and open framework cms values.
We believe in supporting users of legacy software stacks as first class citizens where user freedoms are exalted above the corporate desire to bind users to costly purchases just to use the core product.
Notable Changes (Since Exponential Platform Legacy 2.5.0.1 for PHP 8):
Updated: Rebranding package UI assets from eZ Platform to Exponential Platform. Updated / Replaced Logos used within AdminUI.
Task name before, "Replacing most front facing branding of text string, 'eZ Platform', 'ezplatform' from the user facing displays in code and templates."
Updated: Bugfix to core distribution app/config/config.yml and composer.json rules which fix content tree browse feature in AdminUI.

I was so busy with work I failed to blog here on the exponential blog about the release of a major upgrade now available for your network(s) of Exponential 6.x websites within the Exponential (6.0.10 required) Syndicate extension The release was covered on Share Exponential within the post, "7x Releases Syndication Extension v1.1.0". This extension called simply Syndicate provides a two way SOAP based content syncing solution which allows two Exponential Websites to share users, forums, forum posts, products, media and more between individual separate installations of Exponential CMS.
This release was a labor of love that brought a to life a solution once shared from eZ Systems staff Nicolas Pastorino that I had feared was lost forever in buried archives and backup drives. Rejoice I found the code and upgraded it through rigorous testing and proving the solution upgrades to be feature complete and stable for everyone to benefit from sharing this effective solution to connecting two installations content tree content (content repository), required content classes (content definitions) between each other as needed (on demand is possible; see nl_cronjobs extension).
Fun fact: Exponential can communicate with virtually any other system with the help of helper libraries enough to achieve virtually any customization you can ever possibly desire. This is a time proven fact, not random boasting.
Pull your older eZ Publish 3 through eZ Publish 5 code out of your hard drive records and take a walk down memory lane and upgrade today! Some development may be required.
7x plans to continue to support and develop the Syndicate extension for the foreseeable future. Contact me if you are interested in buying 7x Paid Support to Hire me to help you reach your goals faster than alone.
Download the syndicate extension in zip and enjoy the freedom to syndicate this solution will bring your website!
Cheers,
Graham
I was so busy with work I failed to blog here "enough" about the inner workings within the exponential blog about the release of a major framework version upgrade within Exponential Basic 2.4.0.1 (download in zip) on 9/17/2025 so I am here to clearly state that the best release is the latest realase and all users should strongly consider upgrading to use the new features and large amount of bugfixes to past ezp2 core issues. 7x blog covered the release in "7x Releases Exponential Basic 2.4.0.1" and on the 7x Blog on Share Exponential..
This release was a labor of love that brought a huge list of improvements both to the core kernel of the cms / framework / product, as well as a new feeling of general use without any blocking issues throughout the entire code base. Here are some highlights:
- Settings: Switch from en_GB to en_US language translation (strings) by default settings (customizable).
- Massive code cleanups throughout almost all modules in the cms and bug fixes through relentless testing and manual validation (we work hard for our users).
- Kernel: Merge in ezp3 kernel design and key ezp6 framework php classes to support original intent of ezp2 kernel code implementations within a more modern core kernel.
- This allowed for the cleanup of codes in the index.php and index_admin.php then moved into separate php classes to fit within the new kernel design.
- This now requires the generation or regeneration of php class autoloads. A helper script is provided.
- Kernel: Moved all file assets out of module directories into var directory storage directory structure.
- Kernel: Removal of all include_once based class loading instances in the entire cms product.Replaced with ezp6 autoloads (composer compatible).
- Added new module: eZGroupEventCalendar
- Added new module: eZTip
- Added new module: eZPoll
- Added new module: eZSurvey
- Database: Major database object table fields default sql normalization with current codebase. Meaning no more missing column errors when the two historically became out of sync.
- Admin: Added a Site Design - CSS File Editor (simpler implementation).
- e-commerce: Trade module was so heavily added with new features it's almost too much functionality from past store implementations of days long ago. Note: Some of the features are for reference only as they currently may not function as expected or desired due to what we call in the industry as (bit rot). Some features need only refinement to function to your needed level. Other features no longer make sense in a practical sense but do hold value in educational real world examples of what it took to power some of the greatest sites powered by ezp2.
- USA Feature Support in EB: Finished integrating ezregion support throughout the entire code base (tested).
- File Structure: Moved everything possible to make the installation file storage contain less files by default in root and store files more consistent with future ezp3 standards (using depth or sub-directories more efficiently).

Thanks in part to the recent successes by myself, 7x and the greater Exponential Ecosystem / Community / Users downloading, cloning and studying all four of our cms's source code I was inspired to build a new part to Exponential.earth a section callled by url of /download/statistics which provides Download Statistics From GitHub.com & SourceForge.net.
